I spy a purple cow

In 1999 Chicago started a Cow Parade in which a large quantity of cast cows were painted by artists and displayed throughout the city. The public artwork proved to be a great success, bringing visitors to all neighborhoods in search of cows. Soon the idea caught on and Minneapolis/St. Paul was making the Peanut Gang (in different years) in honor of native Charles Schulz, Washington, D.C. was doing donkeys and elephants; we have seen horses near the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, trolley cars in New Orleans, pelicans near the Houston Bay area, bison in Oklahoma City and recently in a small town with limited resources and no character to define them, fire hydrants were painted the same gusto. Going on a search for these public art works in an excellent free family activity to do on a road trip. Walking to all locations can be a bot too much.
